Gazing upon Capela de Santa Tecla, a curious tale comes to mind. This chapel, nestled in the heart of Porto, holds a secret. It’s a story of a saint, a stone, and a stubborn refusal to stay put. Capela de Santa Tecla, as it stands today, wasn’t always so. Legend says Saint Tecla arrived not by land, but by sea. She sailed up the Neiva River and appeared upon a riverside stone, leaving her footprint behind. The townspeople, awed by this miracle, brought her image to the local parish church. But mysteriously, the image vanished, reappearing back on the riverside stone. Determined to honor her, the people built Capela de Santa Tecla. However, they made one crucial mistake. They oriented the chapel’s door south, away from the saint’s chosen rock. Once again, Saint Tecla’s image miraculously returned to the stone. Finally understanding her preference, the villagers rebuilt the chapel, this time facing the sea and the sacred stone. Satisfied, Saint Tecla remained, watching over her devoted followers from her chosen vantage point. This 18th-century chapel, built in 1729 by José Pinheiro Leite, is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the power of faith and the enduring connection between a saint and her people. Look closely at the inscription above the main door. It reads, “À CUSTA / DE JOZE PINHEYRO LEYTE / ANNO 1729,” a permanent reminder of the chapel’s origins. Inside, the simple yet elegant design features a nave, a sacristy, and an altar adorned with religious figures. Capela de Santa Tecla isn’t just a historical landmark. It’s a living story, whispered through the rustling leaves of the nearby plane and oak trees, a story of devotion, persistence, and the enduring presence of Saint Tecla.
