“A beacon of faith and resilience,” a voice whispers, “that’s Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral.” We stand before this magnificent structure in Downtown Brooklyn, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Greek Orthodox community. Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, originally founded in 1913, holds the distinction of being the first Greek Orthodox parish on Long Island. It’s also one of the oldest Greek Orthodox churches in New York City. Imagine the early days, a small group gathering, their dreams as big as the city itself. They met in a modest building at Johnson and Lawrence streets. Their determination fueled their fundraising efforts, culminating in the laying of the cornerstone for this very building on April 16, 1916. Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral wasn’t always the grand structure we see today. It underwent expansions in 1946 and 1960. These expansions reflect the growth and vitality of the community it serves. In June 1966, it was designated Brooklyn’s cathedral. This honor solidified its role as a central hub for Greek Orthodoxy in the borough. Tragedy struck in 1991 when a fire damaged the building. The resilient community rallied once more, restoring Saints Constantine & Helen to its former glory. The church’s story is deeply intertwined with another tragic event: the September 11th attacks. After the destruction of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Manhattan, Saints Constantine & Helen opened its doors, providing solace and a spiritual home to displaced parishioners. It continues to stand as a symbol of hope and community in the face of adversity. Connected to the church is the A. Fantis Parochial School, established in 1963. This school carries on the tradition of nurturing young minds within a Greek Orthodox environment, ensuring the community’s vibrant future. As you gaze upon Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, remember the dedication of those who built it, brick by brick, dream by dream. It stands as a testament to their faith, resilience, and unwavering commitment to their heritage.
