In 1916 a legacy was born. The Fundacion Francisco Giner de los Rios opened its doors. It was a beacon of education. It aimed to preserve a unique history. The history of the Institucion Libre de Ensenanza. This institution was founded in 1876. It championed educational freedom. It stood against dogma in religion politics and morality.
The Fundacion Francisco Giner de los Rios is more than just a building. It is a testament to these ideals. It’s located at 14 Paseo del General Martinez Campos. The building itself is a story. It has witnessed profound change. It has known periods of glory and hardship.
The Spanish Civil War dealt a devastating blow. The institution’s property was confiscated. Its buildings suffered damage. Even the trees were destroyed. A symbolic act of destruction by falangists. The Fundacion was put on hold. Its work continued abroad. Many institutionists found refuge in exile.
But hope remained. After Franco’s death Manolo Pedregal led the revival. He was the son of Jose Manuel Pedregal. His grandfather was Manuel Pedregal y Canedo. These men had a significant history with the ILE. Manolo fought for the Fundacion’s legal recovery. He started the process in 1977.
The Fundacion regained its legal standing. It recovered much of its property. It resumed its work. It also had to overcome further obstacles. For instance the Colegio Nacional Eduardo Marquina occupied the main building for a time. Between 1980 and 1985.
A new chapter opened in 2003. A major renovation began. It aimed to preserve the original buildings. It sought to adapt the facilities to modern needs. The project preserved the house once home to Giner and later Cossio. It also saved the Pabellon Macpherson. This building is significant. It exemplifies the architecture of the ILE. The renovation also involved a new building. This added new exhibition and auditorium spaces. It reflects the Fundacion’s commitment to the future.
Today the Fundacion Francisco Giner de los Rios thrives. It is a cultural center. It honors the past while shaping the future. It hosts events. It is a place of memory and learning. It stands as a reminder of the enduring power of educational freedom. A legacy that continues to inspire.
