“Did those stained-glass windows always tell the story of Brookhill Baptist Church?” a young visitor might innocently ask. Right here, in the heart of San Antonio, stands Brookhill Baptist Church. This house of worship has been a cornerstone of the community for over six decades. This church wasn’t always the grand structure you see before you. Brookhill Baptist Church started humbly as a small prayer group led by Reverend Leroy Downum in 1957. The faithful group of seventeen initially gathered in homes, their faith undeterred by their modest surroundings. By March 1958, they’d outgrown their makeshift meeting places and moved services to the Kate Schenck Elementary School. Imagine their determination as they held Sunday School in their own homes. Picture their joy when they acquired a tent for worship later that year. This tent served as a powerful symbol of their growing congregation and unwavering faith. It was only a matter of time before they broke ground on their very own chapel in June 1958. Today, Brookhill Baptist Church stands as a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and community. The church’s journey from a small prayer group to a beacon of faith in San Antonio is truly inspiring.
