Ever wondered what secrets lie within those walls? The Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan stands before us. It is the official residence of the Governor of Tamil Nadu. It is in Chennai, the state’s vibrant capital.
Let’s journey back to the 17th century. The earliest governor’s residence was in Fort St. George. It was built in the 1640s. That building was torn down. A new one was erected in 1693.
Later, the governor’s garden house was destroyed by the French in 1746. After the French left in 1749, a new garden house was acquired. It belonged to Antonia de Madeiros, from a rich family. This became the core of what is now Government Estate.
In 1820, Governor Thomas Munro made Government House the official residence. It was previously known as Guindy Lodge. Guindy Lodge served as the governor’s country house. William Langhorne built it in the 1670s. He carved it out of the Guindy Forest.
Langhorne sold the property to Chinna Venkatadri when he left in 1678. Venkatadri gifted Guindy Lodge to the East India Company. It became their Madras Government property.
For a time, Guindy Lodge was a government country house. The French and Mysore ravaged the area in the 18th century. It then passed into private hands. Gilbert Ricketts mortgaged it to the Government Bank in 1813.
Ricketts died in 1817. The bank offered the property to the government. The government acquired it in 1821 for 10,000 pagodas. That was about Rs. 35,000. They also bought an adjacent property from Joseph Nazar Shawmier for Rs. 8,750.
Between 1821 and 1824, the government linked these properties. The Raj Bhavan property, as it existed at Independence, was born.
The Raj Bhavan estate spans 156.14 acres today. In 1924, Lord Willingdon introduced the blackbuck to Guindy Park.
Over the years, land was transferred for public use. This included the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Land was also given for a Deer Park and Children’s Park. Memorials for Rajaji and Kamaraj also received land. A portion became a national park.
The Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan is one of the largest in India. It houses deer, mongoose, jackals, reptiles, and birds. Migratory birds are often spotted here.
The main building has living and reception rooms. Suites are on the second floor. Verandahs line three sides. Inside, you’ll find a drawing room with a chandelier. The Kasturba Annapoorna Hall displays pictures of all the governors. There is also the governor’s office and a reading room.
The Durbar Hall is used for formal functions. It has two areas. The larger area hosts government events. Chandeliers, prints, and engravings of old Madras decorate the hall.
The Presidential Block was inaugurated in 2008. Presidents, prime ministers, and VVIPs stay here. It has its own security.
The Raj Bhavan is not just a residence. It is a symbol of history and governance. It blends nature and architecture. It serves as a reminder of Tamil Nadu’s rich heritage. The Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan stands as a testament to time.
