In the heart of Detroit, the True Light Temple stands as a testament to resilience and transformation. The True Light Temple wasn’t always a place of worship. This building began its life in the roaring 1920s as the Arthur Theatre, a neighborhood cinema bringing joy to Detroiters. Imagine the silent films flickering across the screen, accompanied by a live piano. The laughter and gasps echoing through the hall. The Arthur Theatre, seating 340 patrons, was a beloved local gem. By the 1930s, it was renamed the Crane Theatre. Later, in 1947, it became the Rose Theatre before closing around 1950. The building’s story took a dramatic turn in 1967. Reverend Floyd Mitchell Jr. established the True Light Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, breathing new life into the former theatre. The congregation thrived, becoming a cornerstone of the community. The True Light Church wasn’t just a place for Sunday service. It was a hub of activity, hosting community programs, children’s carnivals, and an annual Women’s Day event. Adding a touch of Motown magic, Kim Weston, a former Motown artist known for her duet “It Takes Two” with Marvin Gaye, directed two choirs at the church in the 1980s. The True Light Church continued to evolve. In 2008, the church’s name was officially changed to True Light Temple, reflecting its enduring presence in the community. Today, the True Light Temple stands proudly on Harper Avenue, led by Pastor Michael Mitchell. It is a beacon of faith, a symbol of transformation, and a living testament to the power of community.
