Demolished. That’s the fate of the Detroit Commerce Building. But its story isn’t over. Right here where a parking garage now stands once thrived a 13-story giant.
The Detroit Commerce Building. A Chicago School marvel. Built in 1915. It housed the People’s Outfitting Company department store. Can you imagine the bustle? The shoppers? The grand opening?
For years the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce made it their home. City and Wayne County agencies worked within its walls. This wasn’t just a building. It was the heart of Detroit’s commerce. A place where deals were struck. Where Detroit’s future was shaped.
But times changed. The department store moved in 1959. The building adapted. It became office space. It stood tall a testament to Detroit’s resilience. Until 2007. That’s when the wrecking ball arrived. The Commerce Building was reduced to rubble.
A parking garage for the Book Cadillac Hotel now stands in its place. Irony isn’t it? A structure built for commerce replaced by a place for cars. Yet above the garage five stories of condominiums were added. New life in the old location. A reminder that even in demolition there is rebirth. The Detroit Commerce Building. Its legacy lives on. Not in stone but in memory. A memory of the heart of Detroit’s business. A reminder of what once was. And of the city’s enduring spirit.
