“Lost?” a voice startled me. I turned to see a friendly face. “Looking for the Gwangjin Fire Station?” He pointed down the street. “Just there, the Gwangjin Fire Station, or as it’s officially known, the Seoul Gwangjin Fire Station. It’s had a few names over the years, but it’s always been a beacon of safety in this city.” This piqued my curiosity. The Gwangjin Fire Station wasn’t just another fire station. It held a unique place within Seoul’s intricate network of emergency services. Established in 1946 as the Seongdong Fire Station, it underwent a transformation in 2008, becoming the Gwangjin Fire Station we see today. This shift reflected the changing landscape of the city itself, with districts evolving and splitting. The station plays a vital role in the 2nd Fire District. This district covers a large swathe of Seoul, including Dongdaemun, Gwangjin, Seongbuk, Dobong, Nowon, Jungnang, and Gangbuk. The Gwangjin Fire Station houses two 119 safety centers. It also includes a current affairs briefing room. This suggests a focus not only on immediate response, but also on community engagement and proactive safety measures. Over the years, the station has witnessed its share of history. A fire in 1963 at a fireworks warehouse led to the tragic death of a firefighter from the then Seongdong Fire Station. Another incident in 1966 saw two firefighters injured in a blaze at an oil paint factory. Even as recently as 2010, firefighters from Gwangjin faced a dramatic rescue. Six people were trapped in a collapsed tent. Braving freezing temperatures and treacherous ice, the team managed to save everyone. These stories resonate with the bravery and dedication of those who serve at the Gwangjin Fire Station. They underscore the importance of this vital institution in protecting the community it serves.
