What if I told you that the impressive Jakob-Fugger-Gymnasium we see before us wasn’t always located here? Originally founded in 1879 as the Stahlmann’sche private Handelsschule, the Jakob-Fugger-Gymnasium actually began its life in a different location with a different name. The school was initially situated at Jesuitengasse 14. This building, unfortunately, fell victim to the ravages of World War II, completely destroyed by a bombing raid in February 1945. Undeterred, the school reopened later that same year, finding a temporary home in the building of the St. Georg elementary school. It wasn’t until 1955 that the Jakob-Fugger-Gymnasium moved to its current location on Kriemhildenstraße. It was also in this year that the school adopted the name it holds to this day. The city council chose to honor Jakob Fugger, a prominent figure in Augsburg’s history not only for his wealth but also for his social ethics. Fugger established the Fuggerei, a pioneering social housing complex that remains a testament to his legacy. Today, the Jakob-Fugger-Gymnasium stands as a co-educational institution offering both a scientific-technological and an economic curriculum. It’s a testament to the enduring power of education and a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.
