Picture this a modest church nestled among towering oaks. This is Saint Andrews Parish United Methodist Church. It stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community spirit. Its history isn’t etched in grand architecture but in the lives it has touched.

This church unlike many others in Charleston didn’t begin with wealthy planters. It started humbly. In 1921 a group of Methodists living west of the Ashley River yearned for a closer church. The nearest one was in Charleston a significant distance away. They started as the Charleston Mission meeting in a one-room schoolhouse.

Their dedication led them to raise funds for a proper building. In 1926 they bought land on Savannah Highway. The Mission became Saint Andrews Parish United Methodist Episcopal Church South. Despite its small size it was the only active Methodist church in the parish.

A few years later in 1935 they acquired another lot near Pierpont a more populated area. This move reflects their growth and commitment to serving their community. Members worked tirelessly fundraising and even holding chicken dinners to fund the construction. While building they met in a member’s home showcasing their intimate fellowship.

Saint Andrews Parish United Methodist Church officially opened its doors in 1936. Reverend J E James became its first minister. At that time the congregation only had 50 members. They were a small but determined group that would see their church expand significantly over time through several additions.

By the late 1970s the church was bursting at the seams. Members requested land nearer to Shadowmoss from the Methodist Conference. Their request was approved. The old property was sold and services temporarily moved to Drayton Hall Middle School.

On December 22 1991 the groundbreaking for the new building began. The new church was completed in 1992. Bishop Bethea consecrated the new facility on October 25 of the same year.

Saint Andrews Parish United Methodist Church isn’t merely a building. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and the power of community. This quiet yet powerful church shows that the spirit of faith can thrive even in modest beginnings. Its journey speaks volumes about the lasting impact of dedication and communal support.
