Reflecting on the story of Jonah. The Jonakirche stands as a testament to new beginnings. It reminds us that faith can be (re)discovered even in unexpected places.
The Jonakirche serves the Evangelical Church community of Kaiserswerth. It is located on Niederrheinstraße in Düsseldorf Lohausen. Here at the corner of Lantzallee, the church extends an invitation to all.
In 1927, the community acquired this very property. A parish hall with a kindergarten was erected here in 1952. As the community grew, so did its needs. By 1989, the parish hall was expanded into a day care center and youth center. But a dedicated worship space was still desired.
Thus, the Jonakirche was built. Inaugurated in 1989, the Jonakirche became a “multi-purpose church building”. Architects Fohrer and Schneiders designed the building. The church’s name is a nod to the Old Testament prophet Jonah. Jonah tried to flee from God but found himself in the great city of Nineveh. Similarly, the Jonakirche aims to be a place where people can seek and find God.
The Jonakirche distinguishes itself through its architecture. Built with brickwork, it integrates the community center. The church space flows into the community hall, entrance hall, and former Küster residence. The tower faces Niederrheinstraße. A glazed passage connects the old building to the new complex.
Originally, the tower was planned to be taller. However, its height was shortened due to air safety concerns. Düsseldorf Airport is nearby. The tower houses the sacristy on the ground floor. A meditation room occupies the upper floor.
Inside the Jonakirche, colorful windows by Joachim Klos illuminate the space. These windows depict Jonah’s journey through shapes and symbols. The interior walls are adorned with a brick pattern. The altar area faces east. A large round window graces the rear wall to the left of the altar.
The Jonakirche also features a Beckerath organ with 14 stops. The Diakoniewerkstatt Kaiserswerth created the hand-embroidered altar cloths. The bells were made by Petit and Edelbrock. They are tuned to the Te Deum.
The Jonakirche embraces modern elements. The room layout is flexible. The foyer encourages fellowship. The seating is variable. Modern spiritual songs fill the air. The services often encourage active participation from all ages.
The Jonakirche is more than just a building. It is a place of community. It’s a place of worship. It’s a place of reflection. It’s a place for new beginnings.
