What if I told you that nestled in the heart of Chiang Mai lies a temple unlike any other, Wat Pah Mak? Today, it stands as a testament to the rich cultural tapestry woven by the Shan people. Wat Pah Mak translates to “Temple of the Pao Tree Grove”. It earned its name from the lush grove that once graced its grounds. Founded in 1883, Wat Pah Mak holds the distinction of being Chiang Mai’s first temple built for the Shan community. Many Shans had journeyed from their home in northeastern Burma to work in the teak logging industry. However, they found themselves without a sanctuary that resonated with their unique Buddhist practices. Inthawichayanon, the seventh ruler of Chiang Mai, recognized this void. Alongside his Shan consort, Mom Bualai, and with the support of the Shan community, he established Wat Pah Mak. At Wat Pah Mak, the architectural style transports you straight to Burma. The chedi, a bell-shaped structure rising from a three-tiered base, draws your eye upwards towards its golden spire. Look closely, and you’ll see four qilin, mythical creatures with lion bodies and dragon heads, guarding each corner. The temple’s heart beats within its two assembly halls. One features a grand seven-tiered pyatthat roof, a hallmark of Burmese design, while the other captivates with its ornate wooden zeitawun roof, a masterpiece of intricate carvings and vibrant red hues. But Wat Pah Mak is more than just a feast for the eyes. Every year, the temple comes alive with the vibrant Poy Sang Long festival. During this three-day celebration in April, young boys embark on their journey as novice monks. The streets transform into a sea of color as the Shan people, adorned in their traditional attire, parade through the city, their heritage a symphony of sights and sounds. As we leave the tranquil embrace of Wat Pah Mak, carry its story with you. Remember the Shan community’s unwavering spirit, their dedication to preserving their traditions in a new land, and the architectural marvel that stands as a testament to their legacy.
