Picture this a bustling city street in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. This isn’t just any street. It’s the heart of Quarters E.

Imagine stepping back in time to 1867. Alonzo Horton a visionary developer had a dream. He purchased hundreds of acres of waterfront property. He wanted to build a new city center. His “New Town” soon flourished. It eventually became the modern Gaslamp Quarter.

The area that would become Quarters E wasn’t always so refined. In the 1880s San Diego boomed. Unsavory characters arrived. Wyatt Earp one of the West’s most famous lawmen was among them. He ran gambling halls here. He even organized excursions to Mexico.

The Gaslamp Quarter had a notorious past. It was once home to the Stingaree a red-light district. Gambling halls bars and brothels thrived. In 1912 the city cracked down. They raided houses of ill repute arresting many women. They were sent out of town by train.

This area was once part of San Diego’s first Chinatown. Chinese abalone fishermen settled here. They weren’t allowed to live elsewhere. The area’s Asian Pacific heritage is still visible today. You can even see hints of it in some of the architecture.

In the 1980s the Gaslamp Quarter was saved. People worked to preserve its history and buildings. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gaslamp Quarter Archway a six-ton iconic structure was built in 1990.

Today Quarters E stands as a testament to resilience and transformation. It has evolved from a notorious district to a vibrant and historic neighborhood. Many historic buildings are now restaurants shops hotels and more. While the wild west days are over the spirit of San Diego’s history is alive and well here in Quarters E.
