Where faith and community intertwine stands the Green Grove Missionary Baptist Church. It is a beacon of hope in Detroit. In 1901, it all began with humble beginnings under a brush arbor. Pioneers like Brother Henry Green and Brother Henry Ross laid the foundation. They were assisted by Reverends J.S. May, Sam Reynolds, Nelson Yarbrough, and E.B. Douglas.
After months under the arbor, the congregation moved to the Odd Fellow hall on Telfair Street. Growth was rapid. Converts multiplied. Reverend Nelson Yarbrough became the shepherd. Despite challenges, he worked tirelessly to build a house of worship.
Following Reverend Yarbrough’s passing, Reverend Lewis Ramsey took the helm. He led the Christian army with love. Early deacons included Leo Webster, George Johnson, and James Chatman. Later, Reverend N.C. Connor from Swainsboro, GA, served as pastor in the 1920s. His powerful preaching drew large crowds. Three ministers were ordained. Five deacons were also ordained.
During Reverend Connor’s time, another church lot was purchased. A new foundation was laid. Reverend T.W. Groover followed him. He oversaw the completion of the present church in 1927. That Second Sunday in September was filled with joy. The congregation sang, prayed, shouted, ate, and raised $100.
In 1932, Reverend W.A. Reynolds was called. He brought more improvements. A piano was purchased. A choir was organized. A baptismal pool and well were constructed. The Ushers’ Board was officially organized. In 1935, Reverend J.M. Benton became pastor. He reorganized the church. The church was remodeled and painted.
Reverend F.T. Tanksley followed Reverend Benton. Under his leadership, church debts were paid. In 1962, Reverend O.D. Hightower served until 1978. During his time, an annex, kitchen, and pastor’s study were added. New pews and storm windows were installed. A Deaconess Ministry was organized in 1969.
Reverend Milton Hughes was called in 1978. He served for nearly 40 years. Bathrooms were remodeled. New pews and carpet were added. Property was purchased around the church. Reverend Hughes’ dedication left an indelible mark.
In 2016, the church legally adopted the name Green Grove Missionary Baptist Church. After Reverend Hughes’ passing in 2018, Reverend Dr. Carl Anthony Wardlaw was elected in 2019. Under Pastor Wardlaw’s leadership, the church continues to grow. New members have joined. The sound system has been upgraded. New ministries have been added.
The Green Grove Missionary Baptist Church has five choirs. They include the Senior Choir and Youth Choir. They also include the Male Chorus, Senior Citizens, and Children’s Choir. Each adds unique harmonies to the services. Deacon Henry Douglas served as Sunday School Superintendent for 50 years. Today, Deacon Willie Horne continues this legacy. The church also has a Laymen’s Ministry.
From its humble start under a brush arbor to its current vibrant state, Green Grove Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and community. It is a place where everyone is welcome. It is a place where everyone can find spiritual nourishment. It is a true cornerstone of Detroit.
