The swirling spire of Paroisse Notre Dame d’Anjou pierces the Montreal sky. Its unique design is a testament to a bold vision. A vision realised in the 1960s.

Paroisse Notre Dame d’Anjou isn’t just a church. It’s a masterpiece of architectural ingenuity. It’s a spiritual sanctuary inspired by the iconic chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp France. Architect Andre Blouin masterfully blended modern design with religious symbolism. He drew inspiration from the renowned Franco-Swiss architect Le Corbusier.

Construction began in 1961 and concluded three years later. This wasn’t just about building a structure. It was about creating a space that fostered spiritual elevation. The spiralling layout with abundant natural light guides the eye towards the altar. This clever design reflects the evolving liturgical practices of the time. The building’s unique form even presented acoustic challenges. Blouin engaged the expertise of Hungarian acoustician Leslie Doelle to overcome these hurdles.

The eleven bells in the church’s carillon. They were cast in 1914 by the McNeely Company of Troy. The White Fathers of Africa generously donated them. These bells are not just musical instruments. They are a part of the church’s rich history and heritage. Their melodic chimes have echoed through Anjou for over a century.

Blouin’s attention to detail extended beyond the structure itself. He designed the liturgical objects and decorative elements. The Stations of the Cross are attributed to the artist Guy Chabrol. The ceramic statue of Notre-Dame-d’Anjou is the work of Claude Théberge. Max Ingrand’s irregularly shaped stained-glass windows illuminate the nave and the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Budget constraints prevented the installation of the planned organ. Instead the opening intended for organ pipes became the backdrop for a mural by Guy Laliberté. This mural was later replaced by a sculpture of the resurrected Christ. Sculptor Jacques Bourgault created this.

In 1986 the baptistery was transformed into an oratory. This altered the church’s interior layout subtly. These changes reflect the evolving needs of the parish over time. Paroisse Notre Dame d’Anjou stands as a testament to enduring faith and artistic innovation. It remains one of Blouin’s proudest achievements. His most original and daring design. Its spiralling form a unique landmark on the Montreal landscape. A place where history faith and art converge.
