“Eight swords,” the old woman whispered, clutching my arm as we approached Yatsurugi-jinja Shrine. “Buried beneath our feet to calm the river’s rage.” Yatsurugi-jinja Shrine, also known as the “8 sword shrine,” isn’t grand or imposing. It’s a small, unassuming wayside shrine nestled near the Enko River in Higashi-Hiroshima. But its modest appearance belies a fascinating legend rooted in the 17th century. The Enko River, once a source of life, had become a constant threat. Flooding was frequent and devastating. In those days, human sacrifices were sometimes offered to appease the spirits believed to control the waters. But the local daimyo, the feudal lord, chose a different path. Instead of a life, he offered eight swords. He ordered them buried at the site that would become Yatsurugi-jinja Shrine. Swords, the soul of the samurai, symbols of strength and honor, were offered to the river spirits. This act, a blend of practicality and spiritual belief, aimed to create a mystical barrier against the floods. The shrine’s name, Yatsurugi, literally meaning “eight swords,” forever commemorates this event. Today, as part of the Futabanosato Historical Walking Trail, Yatsurugi-jinja Shrine offers a glimpse into the past. It speaks of a time when communities lived at the mercy of nature’s whims, when the line between the physical and spiritual was blurred. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and the enduring power of belief in the face of unpredictable forces. The story of the eight swords buried beneath Yatsurugi-jinja Shrine serves as a quiet reminder of the struggles and hopes of those who came before.
