Here stands the Church of Santo Ildefonso. It rises near Batalha Square. It’s a testament to Porto’s artistic heritage. This proto-Baroque church completed in 1739 replaced an earlier chapel. That chapel was Santo Alifon. It was mentioned as early as 1296. By the 18th century it was in disrepair. The original chapel was demolished in 1709. Construction of the current church began the same year. It spanned three decades.

The architect of the Church of Santo Ildefonso remains unknown. Records list craftsmen. They include carpenters, masons, and a locksmith. The first construction phase concluded in 1730. It saw the main body and tympanum completed. From 1730 to 1739 the bell towers facade and narthex were added.

The facade is plain granite. It features cornices dentils spheres a stone cross and metalwork flags. About 11000 Azulejo tiles adorn it. Jorge Colaço created them in 1932. They depict scenes from Saint Ildefonso’s life and the Gospels.

The Church of Santo Ildefonso has seen various restorations over the years. A severe storm damaged it in 1819. Artillery fire during the Siege of Porto in 1833 caused more damage. It was extensively repaired. New stained glass windows were installed in 1967 by artist Isolino Vaz. Renovations in 1996 uncovered nineteen graves. These were in the narthex. They corresponded to the original chapel’s churchyard.

Constructed of granite the church has an elongated octagon shape. Decorative plaster ceilings add to its beauty. A notable retable exists. Italian artist Nicolau Nasoni designed it. It was installed in 1745. Despite the repairs the Church of Saint Ildefonso retains its charm. It remains a significant landmark in Porto. Visitors and worshippers attend daily masses. They admire its striking architectural presence.

Nicolau Nasoni an Italian architect left his mark on Porto. He also designed the Misericordia Church. He worked on the Archbishop’s Palace. Nasoni created the lateral loggia of Porto Cathedral.

Consider also Carmo Church. It combines two structures from the 1600s and 1700s. Its blue tiles narrate the Carmelite order’s history. The Chapel of São José das Taipas showcases a modest yet elegant design. It stands as a testament to the city’s devoutness. The Church of Mercy displays Baroque style. It has an on-site museum.
