In 1928 243 believers left Union Baptist Church. They formed Providence Baptist Church. This was after a vote to remove their pastor Reverend David E Over. The group initially met for prayer and worship. They used a location on Schroeder and Pierce Streets. Mrs Amanda Robinson named the church. She believed its founding was God’s Providence. The church’s Articles of Incorporation were adopted on April 17 1928. Providence Baptist Church bought property on Fremont and Edmondson Avenues. This became their worship center for 48 years. Reverend Dr David E Over became their first pastor. He sadly died suddenly in 1929. Reverend Dr Eugene W White succeeded him in 1929. He guided the church through the Great Depression. The congregation thrived under his leadership. They paid off their first mortgage in 1939 and their second in 1943. Reverend White resigned in 1951 due to ill health. He remained Pastor Emeritus until his death in 1952. Reverend Marcus G Wood became the church’s third pastor. He introduced innovative educational and service programs. These included a Board of Christian Education a Church-wide Institute and a food pantry. Under Reverend Wood’s guidance Providence Baptist Church embarked on a significant building project. This started in 1972 after 30 days of prayer. The new church opened in 1981 at 1401 Pennsylvania Avenue. It was solar-heated a remarkable feat for its time. While building the new church Providence shared facilities with the First Baptist Church of Baltimore. Later additions included 13 Sunday School rooms and an Adult Day Care facility.
