A beacon of history Radio Mayak stands as a testament to Russia’s broadcasting legacy. Radio Mayak is more than just a radio station. It’s a cultural touchstone.

Radio Mayak began its journey on August 1 1964. It emerged as a prominent All-Union Radio station. Its mission was to deliver news and light music to the masses. The name Mayak translates to “lighthouse” or “beacon” in Russian. It symbolizes the station’s role as a guiding voice.

Initially Radio Mayak followed a unique format. It featured five minutes of news followed by 25 minutes of music. This format known as “5/25” was distinctive. Radio Mayak quickly gained popularity throughout the Soviet Union.

Alexander Yakovlev a key figure behind perestroika is considered the founder of Mayak. Vladimir Dmitrievich Tregubov served as its first editor-in-chief. Yuri Letunov became editor-in-chief in 1966. He shaped the radio station’s characteristic image.

The melody “Moscow Nights” became Radio Mayak’s signature tune. It was played every 30 minutes. In the early days the first bars of the song marked the hour. Later bars indicated the half-hour. This made it easy for listeners to tell time.

In the late 1980s Radio Mayak introduced “Panorama of Mayak”. It was a four-hour program hosted by popular radio personalities. The radio station provided a platform for news and “Concerts on Letters”.

Throughout its history Radio Mayak underwent structural changes. In the 1990s it became part of the All-Union State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company. It later evolved into the Federal State Unitary Enterprise All-Russian State Radio Broadcasting Company Mayak.

In the early 2000s Radio Mayak experimented with different formats. Mayak-24 a news and talk station broadcast on FM. The traditional format continued on VHF. Eventually the two formats were unified.

In 2007 Sergey Arkhipov proposed a new concept. He aimed to attract a younger audience. He wanted the station to attract listeners aged 25-35 years old.

In 2013 Radio Mayak ceased broadcasting on long and medium waves. This limited its reach to rural areas and highways. The reason was the termination of payment by VGTRK for transmitters.

Despite these challenges Radio Mayak remains a leading news and talk radio network. In 2014 it had a daily audience of approximately 4.2 million people in large Russian cities.

Today Radio Mayak continues to evolve. It broadcasts on FM digital television and online. It adapts to the changing media landscape while preserving its legacy. Radio Mayak remains a relevant voice in Russia’s media landscape.
