Founded in 1983 Houston Graduate School of Theology HGST has a rich history. Initially housed in the Texas Medical Center HGST served the Evangelical Friends Church. The school later moved several times. First it moved to the Adams Petroleum Building in 1987. Then in 1996 it relocated to Central Congregational Church. Finally in 2013 HGST found its home at the Willow Meadows Baptist Church campus. HGST’s journey reflects its adaptability and commitment to its mission. This evangelical seminary trained students from over 30 denominational traditions. It’s a testament to its inclusive approach. Dr Delbert Vaughn and his wife Carol founded this institution. Their vision shaped HGST’s identity. For fifteen years HGST was affiliated with the Evangelical Friends Church – Mid America. This association solidified its roots in the evangelical community. In 2021 HGST became a founding member of Kairos University. This signified a significant step in its growth. Dr Becky Towne became its fifth and final president. She oversaw HGST’s transition into a Legacy Partner within Kairos. This merger in 2023 marked a new chapter. HGST’s legacy continues through its graduates. Among them are notable figures like Samuel Jackson Gilbert Jr. a pastor-emeritus. Ken Gross an author is also an alumnus. Donald C. Simmons Jr. a former dean and pastor is another success story. Even Dr Towne herself is an alumna. HGST’s impact extends beyond its campus. The school’s contribution to theological education is undeniable. HGST offered a range of degrees. It offered a Master of Divinity MDiv a Master of Arts in Counseling MAC and more. The Doctor of Ministry DMin program was a popular choice. The school’s commitment to academic excellence and its multidenominational approach made it unique. Though its ATS accreditation ended in 2024 HGST left a lasting impact.
