Abe no Seimei’s legacy. It’s palpable here at Seimei Shrine. Feel it?

Welcome to Seimei Shrine a small but significant Shinto shrine in Kyoto. This place is dedicated to Abe no Seimei a Heian Period astrologer and diviner. He was incredibly influential at the Imperial Court. He was more than just a fortune teller though. He was considered an onmyo-ji a master of onmyodo the Way of Yin and Yang. Think of him as a powerful magician and astronomer combined.

Seimei lived a remarkably long life for his time well into his eighties. He remained healthy. This added to his mystique. He lived near the Ichijo-modori Bridge. It was known as the devil’s gate. The northeast corner of the Imperial Palace was considered a source of evil. The Emperor had Seimei live there to ward off bad influences. That’s why this shrine sits where it does. It’s built on the site of his home.

Emperor Ichijo built the shrine in 1007 two years after Seimei’s death. The emperor hoped Seimei’s protection would continue even after death. Notice the pentagram motif everywhere. It symbolizes the Five Chinese Elements wood fire earth metal and water. These elements are connected in a cycle. This system is still used in Eastern health design time and space systems. The Japanese bellflower is another important symbol here. It has five petals mirroring the pentagram.

The shrine buildings you see today are from the 1920s. There is a special well here. The water is believed to have magical properties. The famous tea ceremony master Sen no Rikyu even used this water. The most important festival is the Seimei Matsuri held annually on the autumnal equinox.

Seimei’s story continues to inspire. You see him in books movies TV shows manga and anime. He is a powerful figure a kind of Japanese Harry Potter. He has become a legendary figure. His influence is everywhere in Kyoto and beyond. Take a moment to soak in the atmosphere of this unique shrine. Reflect on Seimei’s incredible life and legacy. Seimei Shrine a place where the past and present intertwine. A place of magic and mystery.
