Swept away by the tide of time, some stories endure. St. Richard Catholic Church whispers such a story. Here, on Brookside Drive, stands a testament to faith, a beacon that has guided generations. St. Richard Catholic Church started humbly. In 1890, Swanton’s Catholic residents petitioned Bishop Richard Gilmour for a church. Just a year later, land was procured on Dodge Street, even including two acres for a cemetery. By 1892, a simple frame church arose, costing a mere $1,631. The first Mass at St. Richard Catholic Church took place on May 7, 1893, serving about 20 families. The church was officially dedicated on October 22nd of that same year. St. Richard Catholic Church grew with the community. In 1900, transepts were added, transforming the building into a cruciform structure. A rectory followed in 1908, located on Walnut Street. It wasn’t until 1909 that St. Richard Catholic Church officially became a parish with the appointment of Reverend John Berthelot. The parish continued to flourish. By 1942, it had grown to 230 families, necessitating interior remodeling to accommodate everyone. The growth spurt continued under Rev. Matthew Clancy. Mass attendance doubled in just seven years. This led to the purchase of over 22 acres of farmland in 1953. A successful building fund in 1955 paved the way for a new hall and school. The hall temporarily served as the church. The transition occurred in 1957. A procession of 102 cars marked the move from the old Dodge Street location to the new site on Farner Avenue, now Brookside Drive. The new school opened its doors in 1958, staffed by the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania. St. Richard Catholic Church continued its evolution. The new church was completed and dedicated in 1966. The school expanded, adding grades seven and eight. Various additions and renovations followed, including a Parish Life Center, preschool, and sanctuary updates. Through it all, St. Richard Catholic Church remained a steadfast presence. It has weathered challenges, celebrated milestones, and embraced change.
