Imagine those early Native American groups who lived here for centuries. They left behind archeological sites like the fascinating Indian Rock pictograph. Then came the Spanish explorers followed by the founding of the San Luis Rey Mission in 1798. This mission dramatically altered the lives of the local Native Americans who were forced to work for the mission. The area became primarily grazing land.

The Rancho period began around 1835 after Mexican independence. Vista boasted three ranchos. Rancho Buena Vista Adobe is now a city park. Rancho Guajome Adobe a much larger and more successful ranch became a county park. Agua Hedionda Y los Monos a third rancho is now mostly developed. The ranchos eventually faded due to political changes and drought.

The Vista Post Office established in 1882 officially gave Vista its name. The arrival of the railroad in 1887 revolutionized the area’s agricultural output. The year 1913 marked the permanent establishment of downtown Vista. The Vista Inn and train depot cemented its location. The Vista Union School District was formed in 1917 combining three smaller districts. The Vista Irrigation District created in 1923 solved the long-standing water problem.

The Great Depression slowed growth but it resumed after 1936. The city incorporated on January 28 1963. Vista’s population exploded. The Vista Historical Society continues to collect and display the artifacts of Vista’s vibrant history. The annual Days of ’49 celebration from 1932 to 1939 was a huge fundraising event.
