Navigating the industrial heart of Hamburg, we find ourselves at the Tidekanal. This waterway, a vital artery in the city’s circulatory system, pulses with the rhythm of commerce. The Tidekanal stretches 2,600 meters long and 70 meters wide. It was designed to serve the easternmost part of the Billbrook/Rothenburgsort industrial area. Imagine barges laden with goods, navigating this man-made marvel. The Tidekanal branches off from the Moorfleeter Kanal, heading northeast. It ducks under the Halskebrücke, then the Berlin-Hamburg railway and the S-Bahn line to Bergedorf. A little further on, the Bredowbrűcke crosses the canal. Then the Tidekanal curves, shifting its course east-southeast. At this bend, the Industriekanal branches off south. The Tidekanal continues, flowing parallel to the Billbrookkanal for another 1,620 meters. Interestingly, there’s no direct connection between these two waterways. Finally, the Tidekanal passes under the Tidekanalbrűcke, which carries Moorfleeter Straße, before reaching its terminus in a turning basin. The Moorfleeter Kanal itself is a state waterway, part of Hamburg’s port area, and subject to the tides. During low tide, the Tidekanal, from the turning basin back to the Bredowbrűcke, runs dry. This tidal nature adds another layer of complexity to the logistics of navigating the Tidekanal. The constant ebb and flow, a reminder of the city’s intimate connection with the water. The Tidekanal stands as a testament to Hamburg’s ingenuity in shaping its environment to serve its industrial needs.
