Lost in thought, Emperor Daigo considered his legacy. We are standing at Nishikyogokugori-Daigodencho. It is near the Daigo-ji Temple. Let me tell you a story of emperors, monks, and cherry blossoms.

Daigo-ji Temple’s story starts in 874. Rigen-daishi founded it. He was a monk named Shobo. The temple grew important quickly.

Emperor Daigo became a monk here after abdicating in 930. He took the name Ho-kongo. Soon after, he died at 46. He was buried here. The temple then took his name. That is why it is called Daigo-ji.

The Onin War devastated Daigo-ji. Only the five-storied pagoda survived. It stood strong. Reconstruction happened later thanks to Hideyoshi Toyotomi. He rebuilt much of what you see. The last work was completed in 1606. This included the Kondo and Kaisan-do halls.

Daigo-ji has seen both fire and renewal. A forest fire in 1939 destroyed the Buddhist Texts Library. The Juntei-do also burned. It was rebuilt in 1968. Then in 2008, lightning struck the Juntei Kannon-do. It burned down too. Kami-Daigo closed for repairs. It reopened in 2009.

Daigo-ji is divided into three parts. There is Sambo-in. There is Shimo-Daigo also called Lower Daigo. Finally, there is Kami-Daigo also known as Upper Daigo. Each area offers a different experience.

Sambo-in is known for its gardens and cherry blossoms. Shimo-Daigo has important buildings. Kami-Daigo is up the mountain. It requires a hike.

Many national treasures are here at Daigo-ji. The five-story pagoda is the oldest building in Kyoto. It was built in 951. It survived the Onin War. The temple has paintings and sculptures too. These are important cultural assets. Daigo-ji is a World Heritage Site. It is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi held a cherry blossom party here. It was called Daigo no hanami. It took place in 1598. He planted over 700 cherry trees. People still come to see the cherry blossoms in spring. The maple leaves are beautiful in autumn too.

Walking through Nishikyogokugori-Daigodencho connects you to this history. It reminds you of emperors, monks, and the enduring beauty. Daigo-ji is more than just a temple. It is a story of Japan itself. It has history etched in every stone. Every blossom tells a tale. Take a moment. Remember the past.
