Two majestic lions guard the entrance to Daniel M O’Connell Playground. They stand as silent sentinels a tribute to the courage of a young soldier. Daniel M O’Connell Playground isn’t just a place for recreation. It’s a living memorial. It honors a young New Yorker who gave his life in World War I. Daniel O’Connell was the youngest soldier ever awarded the French Croix de Guerre. He was only 18. His bravery is immortalized here in this park.
Opened in 1934 Daniel M O’Connell Playground is one of nine playgrounds built using the War Memorial Fund. This fund was created in 1921 by the New York City Police Department. Imagine the spirit of that time. A community rallying together to honor their fallen heroes. The fund grew to $350000. This money helped create spaces for children to play and remember. The playground’s creation also involved the Federal Temporary Emergency Relief Administration. They provided additional funding for its construction. The park’s original features included a play area wading pool and a field house.
Over the years Daniel M O’Connell Playground has seen many transformations. In 2011 the basketball courts received a major facelift. New asphalt professional-grade backboards and other equipment were installed. The renovation cost $950000. This was thanks in part to Councilman Leroy Comrie. He allocated funds to create a state-of-the-art space. The playground also hosts the annual Jump and Ball contest. This event is organized by LL Cool J and State Senator Malcolm Smith both St Albans natives. The playground’s popularity has led to wear and tear. But the improvements ensure that kids can safely enjoy it for years to come.
Beyond basketball the playground offers a multipurpose area. This space can be used for baseball soccer or field hockey. There are also pull-up bars and exercise equipment. The playground provides something for everyone. It really is a community hub. A place for fitness play and remembrance. The recently added mural Queens Reflections adds another layer to the playground’s significance. It depicts iconic figures from Southeast Queens’ history. This vibrant artwork celebrates the community’s rich cultural heritage. It brings history and art together in a powerful way. Daniel M O’Connell Playground is more than just a park. It is a living testament to bravery community spirit and the enduring power of remembrance.
