“Remote sensing? What’s that?” I once overheard a student ask. Today we will explore the Center of Environmental Remote Sensing. It is also known as CEReS. This center at Chiba University is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the Earth.
CEReS was established in 1995. It has been researching with three missions. These missions involve the environment. The center contributes to remote sensing. CEReS works with many organizations. These are both in Japan and overseas.
The Center for Environmental Remote Sensing educates too. CEReS educates students and staffs. It educates them in ground survey and modeling. This helps to solve environmental problems. CEReS cooperates with graduate school education. It serves as a joint use foothold. It is for the fields of environmental remote sensing.
Satellite remote sensing is essential. It helps monitor the Earth’s environment. It can observe broad areas repeatedly. CEReS develops remote sensing research. It does this with many research organizations. These organizations are in Japan and overseas.
CEReS plays a key role in developing researchers. It promotes international joint research with countries in Asia. CEReS is a National Collaborative Research Center. It belongs to Graduate Schools and Undergraduate departments.
Microwave radar is also used at the Center of Environmental Remote Sensing. It can observe the Earth’s surface. It can do this regardless of day or night. It can even see through clouds and fog. CEReS develops lightweight radar. It can be used on aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Himawari is a well-known weather satellite. It observes the Earth frequently. CEReS processes Himawari data in real time. It provides data in user-friendly formats.
The Center for Environmental Remote Sensing also addresses climate change. Climate change is a critical global issue. Remote sensing technology is essential. It provides long-term data on a global scale. CEReS leads international ground observation networks. It advances research on Earth’s atmospheric environment. CEReS focuses on predicting difficult phenomena.
Here at the Center for Environmental Remote Sensing, various courses are offered. These range from Fundamentals of Radiation Theory to Social Systems of Earth Observation. This reflects CEReS’s commitment to education. Students actively engage in research. They participate in seminars. CEReS also provides textbooks and references.
CEReS is working to mitigate damage from heavy rain. It is collaborating across multiple disciplines. CEReS also integrates satellite remote sensing. It works with local and global scales.
Key personnel at the Center of Environmental Remote Sensing include Director Hattori Katsumi and Vice-Director Ichii Kazuhito. The center is divided into five programs. These programs cover Innovation in Remote Sensing to Social Implementation. Each program is led by dedicated faculty members.
As we conclude our visit to the Center of Environmental Remote Sensing remember that through CEReS’s work we gain a better understanding of our planet. CEReS helps us find solutions to environmental challenges. This makes CEReS a vital institution for our future.
