“Thirsty?” That’s what Shenzhen asked itself in the 1960s. The answer was the Shangxiadu Reservoir. It is a vital part of Shenzhen’s water supply network.

The Shangxiadu Reservoir sits in Luohu District. It is the largest man-made lake in Shenzhen. Imagine this vast water source built in March 1965. It was made for irrigation and drinking water.

This reservoir is more than just a water source. It is part of a protected area. It belongs to the first grade water source protection area. Its drainage basin covers about 65 square kilometers. This area includes urban and forested land in Guangdong province.

Shenzhen Reservoir borders Donghu Park. It also borders the Fairy Lake Botanical Garden. The reservoir drains the western slope of Mount Wutong. Water from here flows into the Sham Chun River. This river marks the border between Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Sometimes, Shenzhen Reservoir discharges water. This can pose a risk to Hong Kong. In September 2023, a discharge caused flood warnings. The Shenzhen Authority announced the discharge late at night. Hong Kong officials had little time to prepare.

Today, the Shangxiadu Reservoir is open to the public. You can visit from 6 pm to 9 pm daily. It has become a popular spot for recreation. Many people enjoy hiking and tourism here.

To get here, take bus No. 3, 17, 23, 29, 211, 308, 320, or 351. Get off at the Shuiku Bus Stop.

Think about the Shangxiadu Reservoir next time you turn on the tap. It quenches the city’s thirst and provides a place for recreation. It stands as a testament to Shenzhen’s growth. It is more than just a reservoir. It is a vital part of the city’s life.
