In 1839, Carl Devrient found his way to Hanover. He secured a permanent engagement at the Hoftheater. For 33 years, Hanover was his stage. He became known for playing heroic roles. Later in his career, he took on challenging character roles. King Lear and Wallenstein were among his most famous.

Carl Devrient had a fiery personality. He was known for his outbursts. But his talent and fame benefited the theater. The theater also benefited the actor. So, Hanover embraced him.

Devrient’s personal life was as dramatic as his stage roles. He married the opera singer Wilhelmine Schr\u00f6der-Devrient in 1823. They divorced in 1828. But they continued to work together for several years. Later, in 1855, he married Johanna Block, a singer and actress from Hanover. His son Max Devrient also became an actor.

Carl Devrient received the Golden Medal of Honor for Art and Science in 1866. In 1869, the city of Hanover made him an honorary citizen. He died in 1872 during a spa stay. A stroke took his life in Lauterberg im Harz.

Here on the Stadtfriedhof Engesohde, Carl Devrient rests in honor. He received this distinction from the city of Hanover. His legacy lives on in the annals of German theater history. Carl Devrient’s dedication and talent made him a star. He shone brightly on Hanover’s theatrical stage.
