“A beacon of faith amidst a bustling metropolis,” whispered an elderly woman, her rosary beads clicking softly. We stand before Cheonjugyo, the Catholic Church in South Korea, a testament to unwavering belief. Cheonjugyo, meaning “Religion of the Lord of Heaven,” is more than just a building. It represents the enduring spirit of Korean Catholicism. In 2023, nearly 6 million adherents, representing 11.3% of the population, called Cheonjugyo their spiritual home. Almost 5,000 priests and 9,000 nuns serve this vibrant community across 1,842 parishes. The roots of Cheonjugyo trace back to the late 16th century, possibly with the arrival of Spanish Jesuit Gregorio Céspedes in 1593. However, the true foundation was laid in 1784 by Yi Seung-hun, baptized Peter, who returned from China with religious texts and ignited the faith in his homeland. The 19th century brought persecution, as the Joseon Dynasty targeted the Church for its rejection of ancestral rites. This clash of beliefs led to thousands of martyrs, 103 canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1984. Among them was Andrew Taegon Kim, Korea’s first priest, ordained in 1845 and martyred just a year later. Despite this adversity, Cheonjugyo flourished. The Apostolic Vicariate of Korea, formed in 1831, evolved into the current structure of three Metropolitan Provinces. Pope Francis’ visit in 2014 marked a significant moment for Cheonjugyo. He beatified 124 Korean martyrs and celebrated Mass at Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul. Cheonjugyo is a vibrant part of Korean society. It has woven itself into the fabric of the nation, even embracing Confucian customs. This blend of tradition and faith is a unique aspect of Korean Catholicism, a testament to its adaptability and resilience.
