What if the stones of the Evang.- Luth.- Pfarramt could talk? They might tell tales of faith and unity. The Evang.- Luth.- Pfarramt stands as a testament to the region’s religious history. It reflects the evolving landscape of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany.

Let’s delve into the story of this significant institution. The Evangelical Church in Central Germany formed in 2009. It was created by merging the Lutheran Church in Thuringia and the Evangelical Church of the Province of Saxony.

The Lutheran Church in Thuringia had roots stretching back to 1921. Churches of eight Thuringian principalities united then. Christian faith has been present in Thuringia since the 6th century. Boniface played a key role in spreading Christianity during the 8th century. Thuringia is closely linked to Martin Luther. He studied in Erfurt and was ordained a priest here.

The Evangelical Church of the Province of Saxony emerged from political changes. These changes occurred in the early 19th century during the Napoleonic Wars. Prussia gained territories and formed the province of Saxony in 1816. A consistory was established in Magdeburg for church administration. The province of Saxony then became part of the Evangelical Church of the Prussian Union. It gained autonomy in 1947.

Before the 2009 merger, the two churches cooperated. They formed the Federation of Protestant Churches in Central Germany in 2004. This collaboration paved the way for a stronger union.

The newly formed Evangelical Church in Central Germany serves around 900000 members. These members are spread across more than 3000 parishes. The church consists of 38 administrative districts called “Kirchenkreise”. The merger consolidated limited financial and personal resources. Previously, three church parliaments and governments existed. Now, there is one synod of 84 members and a 23-member church council. The bishop’s seat is in Magdeburg. The central church administration, the Kollegium, is based here in Erfurt.

Financial pressures motivated the unification. The churches aimed to connect with the people. Stable structures could offer reliable support to parishes and church districts.

The “Letter from Halle” encapsulates the church’s mission. It seeks to integrate faith into daily life. This aspiration guided the merger. It remains valid for the Evangelical Church in Central Germany.

The Evang.- Luth.- Pfarramt embodies this spirit of unity. It represents a commitment to faith. It symbolizes service to the community. As we stand here, consider the rich history.
