Hidden behind Gyeongbokgung Palace stands Sukjangmun Gate. It’s also known as the North Gate, one of Seoul’s Eight Gates. Sukjangmun Gate wasn’t your average entryway. It wasn’t for everyday comings and goings. Instead, it held a special ceremonial role, a silent guardian of tradition. Built in 1396, Sukjangmun Gate originally bore the name Sukcheongmun. Its name shifted to Sukjangmun in the early 1500s. This regal gate, so close to the Joseon Dynasty’s royal residence, wasn’t built for common traffic. Its purpose leaned towards symbolic rituals, a stage for royal ceremonies. The gate has seen its share of history. Fire claimed its original wooden gatehouse, leaving only the stone archway. The gatehouse that stands today is a reconstruction from 1976. Sukjangmun Gate, meaning “Rule Solemnly Gate,” stands as one of the Four Great Gates in Seoul’s Fortress Wall. Even in modern times, Sukjangmun Gate has known periods of quiet solitude. After the Blue House Raid in 1968, the gate and its surroundings were closed to the public, a protective measure in a time of tension. It wasn’t until 2007 that Sukjangmun Gate once again welcomed visitors. Today, you can visit Sukjangmun Gate. Present your identification and step through this portal to the past, a reminder of a time when ritual and ceremony held sway.
