Sculpted in steel, the Paloma de la Paz stands as a testament to peace in Madrid. It’s located in the heart of Parque Enrique Tierno Galván, in the Plaza de la Paz. This isn’t just any sculpture. It’s a symbolic representation of the universe, unveiled in 1988 by Mayor Juan Barranco and Enrique Tierno’s widow. Representatives from the International Association of Mayors of Martyr Cities also attended this momentous occasion. The Paloma de la Paz was created by Madrid artist Francisco Barón Molina. The sculpture itself is striking, a polished white marble dove perched atop a metal rod. At its base, three mosaic-covered spheres rest on a circular pool of water, symbolizing the universe. The surrounding area forms a decagon, about 25 meters in diameter. The design is centered around a five-pointed star, or pentagram. This represents perfection and cosmic balance among the five essential elements. Each element is represented by abstract linear compositions along the star’s arms. They converge on the central dove, guiding visitors towards the symbol of peace. Five tiered, diamond-shaped structures encircle the plaza. They form a truncated pyramid with steps, evoking a mystical and timeless ascent towards the heavens. The Paloma de la Paz invites contemplation. It’s a space designed to be experienced, prompting reflection on peace as a universal aspiration. The dove itself measures 1.50 x 1.20 x 1.20 meters. The stainless steel structure supporting the dove stands amidst three half-meter spheres covered in a mosaic. Five abstract lines, crafted from various materials like granite and wood, represent the five elements. These stretch out from the central structure, connecting to pathways. The central composition sits within a decahedron formed by five rhomboidal structures. These are about 2 meters high, creating a stepped, truncated pyramid shape. The five-pointed star formed by these structures organizes the entire ensemble. The Paloma de la Paz isn’t just art. It’s a powerful message embodied in steel and marble. It is a reminder of the delicate balance of peace and our shared responsibility to strive for it.
