Here stands the Franz Sigel Memorial Statue. A bronze equestrian statue it proudly overlooks Riverside Park. This monument isn’t just a pretty sight. It tells the story of a remarkable man. A man whose life spanned two continents and two wars.

Franz Sigel born in Germany in 1824 had a privileged upbringing. He attended a gymnasium and a military academy. He became a lieutenant in the Baden army. However his liberal political views led him to participate in the 1848 revolutions. After suffering defeats he fled to the United States.

Sigel settled in New York City. He worked as a teacher and journalist. He even wrote for the New Yorker and the New York Times. In 1857 he moved to St Louis Missouri. He became involved in the Republican Party. This was just before the start of the Civil War.

When war broke out Sigel encouraged German-Americans to enlist in the Union Army. His military experience proved invaluable. He rose through the ranks becoming a major general. He achieved a significant victory at the Battle of Pea Ridge. This victory though was the high point of his military career. Later defeats led to his resignation from the army in 1865.

After the war Sigel returned to New York City. He worked in various government positions. He also continued his journalistic career. He died in 1902. His contributions were not forgotten.

Two years later the Sigel Monument Association commissioned a memorial. Sculptor Karl Bitter created this magnificent equestrian statue. It was unveiled in 1907. It stands as a testament to Sigel’s military service and his impact on American history. A full restoration was completed in 2004 ensuring this important piece of history remains for generations to come. So look closely at the detail in the bronze. Notice how Sigel sits firmly on his horse. This powerful image reflects the strength and determination of a remarkable man. A man whose life is forever commemorated here in Riverside Park.
