Our story begins on September 17, 1929. Two operetta companies merged. They came from Kharkov and Leningrad. Together, they presented a Soviet operetta. It was called “Holopka” by N. Strelnikov. At that time, the theater was in the Alexander Garden. It occupied the State People’s House. In 1938, the company moved here to Italyanskaya Street. They exchanged buildings with the Music Hall Theatre.
During the 900-day Siege of Leningrad, the theater remained open. The company performed with courage. They presented light operettas to citizens and soldiers. These performances offered moments of escape. They inspired hope for victory. The building suffered damage from bombs. It closed for some time for restoration.
The Theatre of Musical Comedy reopened in 1996. First, the New Small Stage was inaugurated. Soon after, the old stage opened to the public.
Carlos Rossi designed the building. It was originally a gift for a ballerina. She performed at the Mikhailovsky Theatre. From the outside, it appears simple. Inside, however, it is full of decoration. Velvet and gilding create a stunning effect.
The Theatre of Musical Comedy has staged many popular operettas. Today, you can see works like “Bayader” and “Silvia” by Kalman. “The Merry Widow” by Franz Lehar is another favorite. Children’s plays are also part of the repertoire.
