Journey with me to a unique haven nestled in the heart of Athens, The Nordic Library. What if I told you this unassuming building holds a treasure trove of over 40,000 volumes? The Nordic Library, established in 1995, is a collaborative effort. It is jointly run by the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish Institutes at Athens. The library specializes in archaeology and ancient culture, offering a rich collection of resources for researchers. The Nordic Library also houses some surprising collections. Within its walls resides the archive of Greek-American poet and art historian, Nikos Kalamaris, known by his pen name Nicolas Calas. Imagine exploring letters, essays, articles, and photographs from this surrealist artist, all housed within The Nordic Library. Another unique collection found within The Nordic Library is a donation from Finn Ståhl. This Swedish philhellene and consul in Crete gifted around 250 works related to the Greek poet Constantine P. Cavafy. The Nordic Library is not just a repository of books. It is a living testament to cultural exchange and scholarly collaboration. It’s a place where the whispers of ancient civilizations mingle with the voices of modern researchers, all within the vibrant city of Athens.
Municipality of Zografos
Seven thousand inhabitants. That’s how many people called Zografou home a century ago. Can you imagine the quiet hills then?
