Hidden on Vasquez Boulevard stands the Western Motor Inn. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich recent history. This Denver motel wasn’t just a place to rest weary travelers. For many months it served as an unexpected haven. A sanctuary for new immigrants.

The Western Motor Inn offered 106 rooms. Many were far from luxurious. Some lacked carpets or even working locks. Yet for hundreds of people fleeing hardship the Inn provided a vital service. It kept them off the streets during a period of immense need. It offered a brief respite from the challenges of immigration.

Yong Cha Prince the owner initially planned to close the Western Motor Inn last October. Then she was approached by a stranger. Christina Asuncion had found several Venezuelan immigrants outside in the freezing cold. She brought them to the Inn asking for a room. Ms Prince agreed to help. The motel quickly became filled with new arrivals.

Prince Asuncion and a group of volunteers formed a community. They made the Western Motor Inn a temporary home. Some residents paid rent others stayed for free. All were grateful for the shelter. The generosity and support provided during this time are heartwarming.

Despite regular visits from Denver health officials and outstanding violations the Western Motor Inn continued its mission. The local authorities cited issues like broken plumbing and accumulating trash. But the urgent need overshadowed these problems. Prince and the volunteers continued their work. They provided hope and refuge to those in desperate need.

The Inn’s days as a shelter were numbered. Eventually the sale of the property became final. Everyone had to move. The event was bittersweet. Residents felt gratitude for the safety and kindness. They also mourned the loss of their unexpected community. The Western Motor Inn’s story shows the power of unexpected generosity. It highlights the challenges faced by new immigrants and the importance of community support. The Western Motor Inn’s legacy remains a testament to human compassion in the face of adversity.
