Sweeping panoramas of Athens await you at the Θέα προς Φαληρικό Δέλτα. This viewpoint isn’t just a place to take photos. It’s a portal to the past, present, and future of this vibrant city. The name itself, Θέα προς Φαληρικό Δέλτα, hints at its purpose: a vista towards the Faliro Delta. This delta no longer exists, reclaimed in the 1920s and transformed into a modern coastal suburb. Yet, from this vantage point, you can almost imagine the delta’s marshy landscape teeming with life. You can envision the ancient ships navigating the waters.
The Athenian statesman Themistocles, realizing the strategic importance of the sea, convinced the Athenians to construct a naval base in the area around 493-492 BC. Now, fast forward to the 19th century. During the 1850s-1860s, the area near the New Faliro, where the ancient port once thrived, became a popular recreational area for Athenians. The construction of the “Aktaion” casino and other leisure venues attracted crowds of people. In the 1870s, the area near the New Faliro underwent further transformation. Residential and commercial developments began to appear. The neighborhood slowly became integrated with the rest of the city.
By 1910-1915, wealthy residents started constructing their grand summer villas in Faliro Delta. The iconic “Villa Kouloura” was built during this period, adding to the neighborhood’s unique character. Between 1922 and 1924, electric tram lines connected Faliro Delta with central Athens. This made the area easily accessible and further contributed to its growth. The municipality of New Faliro experienced a population boom. By 1951, there were 6,538 residents. By 1968, it officially merged with the municipality of Piraeus. This marked a new chapter in the area’s history. The New Faliro became a vibrant suburb, integrated into the larger urban fabric of Piraeus and Athens. From this vista at the Θέα προς Φαληρικό Δέλτα, you can witness the result of centuries of development. You can see the bustling cityscape, the shimmering coastline, and feel the pulse of Athens beating strong.
