In 1914 a new chapter began. Zion Lutheran Church held its first services. This was in the Heights neighborhood. Specifically Woodland Park. Before 1914 Houston only had two Lutheran congregations. Both were downtown. The Mission Board of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Iowa saw an opportunity. They wanted to establish congregations in Houston’s suburbs. The Heights was considered a suburb at that time. In December 1914 sixteen charter members formed Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. They were from the Woodland Heights community. In February 1915 they bought land on Pecore and Beauchamp Streets. They built their church home there. Over the decades Zion grew. Reverend Ander Reverend Luther M Schliesser and Reverend George Peck led the church. Membership boomed reaching 1600 by 1950. Zion helped many congregations in and around Houston. This was through mission work and financial assistance. They helped organize St Paul’s Lutheran in 1915. North Side Lutheran followed in 1917. Park Place Lutheran came in 1937. Faith American Lutheran was organized in 1947. Finally Advent Lutheran joined in 1961. Zion offered many services to the community. These included a Mothers’ Day out program a preschool daycare a food pantry family counseling and support and a youth choir. They also provided seminary scholarships. Zion Lutheran Church has always been a place of service. It has served Harris County for many years. Even with its impressive history Zion remains a place of change. It is constantly growing and evolving in its faith. It continues to reach out to its community. It spreads the love and word of God. Today Zion continues to connect people with God and each other.
