Kathja von Holdt, head of Polizei Abschnitt 21, surveyed her bustling station. The phones rang incessantly. Officers hurried in and out. Polizei Abschnitt 21 wasn’t just another police station. It was the heart of Spandau, a district as diverse as Berlin itself. Located near the town hall and central transportation hub, Polizei Abschnitt 21 served over 140,000 people within its 43 square kilometers. That’s comparable to a large German city. Its jurisdiction stretched from Berlin’s city limits almost to Charlottenburg, bordered south by Brunsbütteler Damm. This meant the officers of Polizei Abschnitt 21 handled everything from the vibrant energy of the Altstadt to the tranquil paths of Spandauer Forst. Think of the contrast: bustling shops, bars, and restaurants of the old town versus the vast green expanse of Spandau Forest, one of Berlin’s largest wooded areas. Polizei Abschnitt 21’s officers were constantly navigating this mix of old and new, from the historic residential areas to the modern city quarters springing up. The area included Falkenhagener Feld, Hakenfelde, Spandau Mitte, Haselhorst, and Siemensstadt, each with its own unique character. And with the development of the Siemensstadt Smart Campus, Polizei Abschnitt 21 faced the future head-on. The officers here, under von Holdt’s leadership, were available 24/7, 365 days a year. Polizei Abschnitt 21 was more than a building; it was a vital thread in the fabric of Spandau.
