Gazing up at the majestic 32-foot Anjaneya Swami in Nanganallur, one can’t help but feel a sense of awe. This isn’t just any statue. The Anjaneya Swami Temple houses a Hanuman idol carved from a single block of granite. It’s a testament to the devotion and vision of Sri Ramani Anna. He dreamt of a grand temple for Anjaneya. He sought the blessings of Sri Chandrashekarendra Saraswati Mahaswamiji of Kanchi Mutt. The Mahaswamiji himself oversaw the installation of this incredible statue in 1989. The temple was consecrated a few years later in 1995. But the story doesn’t end there. Legend tells of a slight mishap, a detail overlooked. Anjaneya’s tail was raised above his head. When Ramani Anna consulted with the Mahaswamiji, he was told that Hanuman never stands with his tail raised before Lord Rama. The consecration was imminent. Correcting the statue seemed impossible. The Mahaswamiji simply advised Ramani Anna to proceed. He assured him Anjaneya would cooperate. On the day of the consecration, a miracle occurred. Anjaneya’s tail had been perfectly severed, as if by a sculptor’s hand. The Anjaneya Swami Temple isn’t just about this breathtaking statue. Inside, you’ll find shrines to Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana. There’s even a shrine to Lord Krishna with Rukmini and Satyabhama. This is a rare occurrence in Anjaneya temples. It signifies Hanuman’s presence in both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Today, the Anjaneya Swami Temple is managed by the Hindu Religious and Charity Endowment Department. It continues to draw devotees seeking blessings, strength, and a connection to the divine.
