“Who was Greenberg?” I wonder. The Greenberg Memorial Bench stands as a tribute to someone special. Let’s uncover the story behind this memorial.
The Los Angeles County Parks Foundation offers the Adopt a Bench program. This program allows people to honor loved ones. It does so by installing a commemorative bench in a park.
Individuals can pay tribute through this initiative. Families, organizations, and groups can all participate. They can commemorate someone by purchasing a bench. The bench is then installed in one of LA County’s beautiful parks.
The LACPF Adopt a Bench initiative operates through donations. Applicants partner with the LA County Department of Parks and Recreation. Together they install a commemorative bench in a chosen park.
Donors complete a formal application and submit it to LACPF. Upon receiving the application and donation, LACPF collaborates with the applicant. They determine the final location for the bench within a LACDPR park.
The Parks Foundation and LACDPR work with Landscape Forms. They detail a 2×10 commemorative bronze plaque. This plaque is placed on a six-foot wide bench. The Greenberg Memorial Bench likely followed this process.
Perhaps the Greenberg family wanted to honor a loved one. Maybe friends and colleagues contributed to the memorial. It could be a tribute to George Delbert Greenberg. He was born December 2, 1924 and died June 25, 1953. He is buried at Home of Peace Memorial Park in East Los Angeles.
There was also a Samuel Greenberg who was a businessman and philanthropist. Samuel Greenberg came to the Valley by horse and wagon. He was from Norwalk when he was only 2. He passed away at the age of 81. He founded one of the oldest truck and rental equipment businesses in the nation in 1931.
Sam’s U-Drive operated in Van Nuys, North Hollywood, West Los Angeles and Bakersfield. He was appointed to the Airport Commission in 1973. He served as president for three two-year terms. Maybe the Greenberg Memorial Bench commemorates him.
Another Greenberg was Ike Greenberg. Ike was involved with the Jewish Community Building of the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles.
Regardless of who is specifically honored, the bench provides a place for reflection. It offers a spot to remember and appreciate the contributions of someone special. This memorial bench serves as a lasting testament. It symbolizes love, respect, and remembrance within the community. It reminds us of the impact one person can have.
