Nestled in the hills of Arashiyama sits the 山88 Laughing Stone. It’s a place of quiet contemplation, a stark contrast to the bustling city of Kyoto. The stone itself isn’t particularly grand. But it’s the story behind it, the story of Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple, that truly captivates. The temple, originally built in the 8th century, was plagued by misfortune. Floods and fires repeatedly ravaged the grounds, until only a few structures remained. Eventually, the temple was relocated to its current location in the early 20th century. Even then, disaster struck again in the form of a typhoon. The temple’s fate changed in 1955 with the arrival of Kocho Nishimura, the new head priest. Nishimura was not only a man of faith but also a skilled sculptor. He began to restore the temple, imbuing it with his unique artistic vision. He invited his students to join him, encouraging them to express their own creativity. Over 30 years, they carved 1,200 Rakan statues, disciples of Buddha, each with its own distinct personality. These whimsical figures, with their expressive faces and humorous poses, fill the temple grounds. They stand as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of art to heal. You’ll find statues reading books, playing music, even holding cameras. The 山88 Laughing Stone stands among these figures, a silent observer of the temple’s transformation from ruin to a place of joy and wonder. It’s a reminder that even amidst adversity, laughter and creativity can flourish.
