Did anyone know The Jewish Center was once called “The first Shul with a Pool?” Here we stand before The Jewish Center on West 86th Street. It’s a grand Neo-Classical building. It has served the Upper West Side community since 1918. The Jewish Center’s story begins with prosperous Jewish families migrating to the newly developed Upper West Side. Drawn by the IRT subway line, they sought a traditional Orthodox synagogue. Unable to find one that met their needs, they built their own. The Jewish Center was more than just a place of worship. It became a hub for social, cultural, and recreational activities. This earned it the affectionate nickname, “The first Shul with a Pool.” The Jewish Center’s first rabbi was Mordecai Kaplan. He served from the founding until 1921. His reform-oriented views ultimately led to his resignation. He was succeeded by Rabbi Dr. Leo Jung in 1922. Rabbi Jung became a prominent figure in Orthodox Judaism. He was involved in numerous organizations both in the US and abroad. He served The Jewish Center for 65 years. He continued as Rabbi Emeritus until his death in 1987. After Rabbi Jung’s retirement, Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm took the pulpit in 1959. He later became president of Yeshiva University. Rabbi Lamm was a strong advocate for Torah Umadda. This philosophy blends Torah study with secular knowledge. His sermons drew new members to The Jewish Center. He highlighted the relevance of traditional Judaism to modern issues. Today, The Jewish Center continues its legacy of community and education. It stands as a testament to the vision of its founders. They wanted a place that nourished both the spiritual and social lives of its members.
