Founded in Karlsruhe on October 29 1868 Corps Hubertia Freiburg boasts a rich history. Initially a society for forestry students it quickly expanded its membership. Its motto Concordia parvae res crescunt discordia maximae dilabuntur speaks to its emphasis on unity and cooperation. This translates to concord will make small things flourish discord will destroy even the greatest.

The Corps Hubertia’s connection to Baden’s forestry administration is fascinating. For decades its members held a significant portion of leadership positions. This influence wasn’t without controversy. During the Weimar Republic Finance Minister Heinrich Kohler openly sought to remove Hubertia’s members from Baden’s forestry service. He even instituted a quota system limiting forestry student enrollment. This was partly due to the perceived dominance of Hubertia members within the field and also the Kulturkampf the ongoing religious and political struggles in the region.

Despite challenges the Corps Hubertia persevered. Its move to Freiburg in 1920 marked a new chapter. It joined the Freiburger Senioren-Convent becoming part of the KSCV a prestigious association of German student corps. The transition wasn’t easy. The move left only fourteen active members initially all forestry students. The remaining members stayed in Karlsruhe.

World War II presented further obstacles. The Nazi regime forced the Corps’ dissolution in 1935. However its members continued informally as the Hermann Lons comradeship. Post-war the Corps Hubertia was re-established in 1948. It resumed its activities. The group played a key role in helping reconstitute other Corps.

Today Corps Hubertia Freiburg stands as a testament to resilience. Its members uphold traditions like academic fencing duels and hunting. An alumni hunting school operates from the Corps house offering courses to students from various fields. This reflects the Corps’ continued commitment to tradition and community. The unique relationship with Corps Friso-Cheruskia a bridge between two major student corps associations further exemplifies this commitment.

The Corps’ current house on Fürstenbergstraße 23 replaces their previous location. The former house Zum Felsenkeller was demolished for road construction. Hubertia also maintains a lodge in the Black Forest. This serves as a place for members to connect with nature and each other. The Corps Hubertia continues to shape its community and its legacy. It stands as a unique part of Freiburg’s history.
