In 1903, the cornerstone was laid for what would become Cedar Grove Christian Academy. It started as Lawndale School, a stately Colonial Revival style building in the heart of Philadelphia’s Lawndale neighborhood. Cedar Grove Christian Academy now occupies this historic structure. The original building, constructed from 1903-1904, boasts two stories, three bays, and a striking stone-faced brick exterior. Heavy stone sills and lintels accent the windows, and a crenellated parapet crowns the roofline. In the 1920s, two two-story wings, designed by Irwin T. Catharine, expanded the school’s footprint. This expansion provided more space for learning and growth for the generations of students who would pass through its doors. Cedar Grove Christian Academy carries on a legacy of education in this building. Its mission is to provide a quality Christian education emphasizing traditional Biblical values, hoping to shape young people to make a positive impact on the world. The school’s 2.2-acre campus provides a nurturing environment where faith and learning intertwine. The school’s commitment to its mission is supported by Cedar Grove Church and a network of partners. This historic building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988, stands as a testament to the enduring power of education and faith.
