The air here seems different, doesn’t it? Cooler, perhaps, with a hint of eucalyptus and the promise of adventure. We are standing at the foot of Mount Samson, a landmark that has borne witness to the changing tides of time in this part of Queensland. Mount Samson, you see, isn’t just a pretty face in the D’Aguilar Range. This mountain, or should I say, “Buran,” as the indigenous people called it, meaning “wind,” holds centuries of stories within its slopes. The wind whispers tales of the indigenous people who first called this place home, long before the arrival of European settlers. It speaks of explorer Allan Cunningham, who inadvertently misnamed the mountain “Sampson.” Imagine the lives of the early settlers who arrived in the 1870s, drawn by the promise of fertile land. They cleared the thick bushland, established dairy farms, and planted orchards, their days filled with the rhythms of rural life. Mount Samson even had its own railway station, connecting this once-isolated community to bustling Brisbane from 1919 to 1955. Although the railway is long gone, the spirit of Mount Samson remains. It’s in the echoes of children’s laughter at the Mount Samson State School, a school with a close-knit community despite being described as a “school without a town.” And it’s in the breathtaking views from the summit, a panorama that stretches all the way to Moreton Bay, reminding us of the enduring beauty of this special place.
