Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Seoul, discover the Changwi Jungang Catholic Church. This church holds a special place in the hearts of many. It has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in the Changwi district.
Changwi Jungang Catholic Church’s story began on February 25, 1969. A small group of just ten people, led by a pastor named Lee In-gu, gathered at 232 Changwi-dong. They held their first service and dreamt of a new church. By April 13, 1969, the church’s structure was complete enough to hold a proper inaugural service. As the congregation grew, the church expanded. They moved to Seongbuk-dong in May 1970.
In 1971, the church welcomed three new pastors: Lee Ik-hwa, Kim Young-soo, and Cho Kyung-sook. The church purchased land in Pocheon-si that same year. This expansion marked a significant step. A new church building, much larger than the original, was constructed in April 1972. The congregation moved into the new building on December 24, 1972. Lee In-gu, the original pastor, stepped down in June 1975. Kim Young-soo became the new pastor. The church continued to grow and adapt to its expanding community.
Over the years, Changwi Jungang Catholic Church has seen many changes. Pastors have come and gone. New buildings have been added. Yet, the church’s commitment to its community has remained steadfast. The church has been a constant presence in the ever-evolving landscape of Seoul. It serves as a testament to the enduring power of faith. Changwi Jungang Catholic Church’s journey reflects the resilience and growth of the community it serves. It remains a vibrant hub of faith and community in Changwi.
