Did you know that Yakuo-ji is known as a good place to pray for protection? It can keep misfortune away. This temple is the 23rd temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.

Yakuo-ji Temple’s history goes back centuries. Emperor Shōmu ordered its construction. The temple was unfortunately destroyed by fire in the Bunji era. Emperor Go-Daigo then ordered it to be rebuilt. The main hall that we see today was rebuilt in 1908.

This temple is dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai. This is the King of Medicine Master and Lapis Lazuli Light. Kobo Daishi carved the statue of the medicine Buddha. He prayed for good luck for everyone.

Let’s talk about the unique “yaku-zaka” here at Yakuo-ji. As you climb these steps, you can place a one-yen coin on each one. This is said to keep misfortune away. After crossing the Yaku Yokebashi bridge, you’ll encounter a series of steps. There are 33 stone steps for women called “Onnazaka”. Following this are 42 steep stone steps for men called “Otokozaka”. Finally, 61 steps lead to the main hall. These are called the “60th Birthday Misfortune” steps for both men and women. Underneath each step are pebbles. “Yakushi Hongan” is written on them. This means “vow of Yakushi Nyorai”.

The temple’s pagoda stands out with its unique design. It has a narrow cylindrical structure. Five pillars stand on the roof. They represent harmony between heaven and earth.

There is a story of the main deity. The deity flew away with light to Tamakushiyama during a fire. When the temple rebuilt the Yakushi Nyorai statue, it returned. It entered backwards. It has been a secret Buddha ever since. It is known as a rear-facing medicine Buddha.

Yakuo-ji also holds annual events. These include New Year’s First Prayer and the Setsubun Star Festival. There is also the Shakuson Flower Festival.

Yakuo-ji isn’t just a temple. It’s a place for meditation and learning. Shingon meditation and calligraphy classes are available here. Students copy Buddhist sutras. Vegetarian meals made with local produce are also offered. There is even a hot spring that is open to the public. Pilgrims and locals enjoy it.
