Did you ever hear of a church rising from the ashes of a different faith? That’s the story of Yangwon Church in Seoul. Right here in the bustling Myeongdong district, Yangwon Church stands as a testament to transformation.
Yangwon Church wasn’t always a church. It began in 1999 as a Buddhist temple. It was initially called Myeongdong First Buddhist Temple. It served the local Buddhist community in this area. However, the temple’s future took an unexpected turn. Due to a land sale and a series of relocations, the temple found a new home. It was reconstructed and renamed. In 2005, it officially became Yangwon Church under the Presbyterian Church of Korea.
The church’s current location has its own interesting history. It was previously the site of the LH Corporation’s public housing project. This adds another layer of transformation to this site. Yangwon Church has since become a spiritual home for many. It continues its mission of service and community engagement. It carries the legacy of its past while embracing its present identity as a Christian church.
